2026 Spring Edition

Vol 1, No. 2

Snow and ice are beginning to melt on the Greenbrier River.

This picture is on the ALT route heading south after leaving the town of Durbin.

President’s Pulse

Despite the cold weather and snow, WVSTA has been busy in the background developing the 2026 work schedule, social/ tabling schedule, attending webinars, having committee meetings and are excited about our grant awards.

We are also launching the NEW “March ALT Recon Project” and just purchased a 6×12 trailer we will be converting into a tool and chuck wagon.

We have a lot of dedicated volunteers striving to make 2026 even better than 2025 both on and off trail.

Be on the lookout for several FarOut App updates and new merchandise launching soon!  – WVSTA President Justin Mullins

WVSTA Board Updates

3 Grant’s Were Awarded

Tucker Community Foundation gave $400 towards an Inreach Mini for the ALT.  This item will greatly improve communication safety and efficiency at ALT workdays.

The Snowshoe Foundation awarded WVSTA $2,000 towards this 6X12 trailer. More details and pictures to come as this tool trailer/ chuck wagon gets a professional wrap and the build-out commences.

This incredible project is going to transform not only how the ALT volunteers execute trail work, it will allow us to assist rural towns and partners if a weather event occurs or if a search and rescue is underway.  This will also act as a moving billboard in and out of the ALT corridor sharing about WV’s longest hiking trail.

AFNHA awarded $3,450 to WVSTA for 12 NEW HISTORICAL SIGNS along the ALT in five counties- Preston, Tucker, Randolph, Pocahontas and Greenbrier.  This grant committee is working weekly to execute this educational project over the next year.  Stay tuned for updates!

Where Passion Meets the Path

written by Tiffany Babcock

WVSTA Membership and Volunteer Coordinator

Poem by Sara Teasdale:

I stood beside a hill
Smooth with new-laid snow,
A single star looked out
From the cold evening glow.

There was no other creature
That saw what I could see—
I stood and watched the evening star
As long as it watched me.

Winter is the time of year for reflection and renewal. We make New Year’s Resolutions and think about what we want to happen in the upcoming year.

If you’re like me, I make some resolutions that never come to fruition, but I give it a good try anyway. One of my resolutions was to be kinder to myself and give myself more grace. I tend to procrastinate and then critique myself too harshly. I feel like I can always do more, go more places, get more involved with things that I love, but instead I find myself curled up on the couch with snacks binge watching something mindless. You know what, that’s ok sometimes. Just like it’s ok to not volunteer at every event the trail has scheduled.

You can participate in one, two, or none at all. If the physical labor aspect doesn’t work for you, you can help by just sharing our social media, sending a donation, making food for the volunteers, coming to a “Meet The Trail” hang out session, or even helping on a committee. There’s a place for everyone in the organization.

“The heart of a volunteer is never measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others.” -DeAnn Hollis
